Who Do Men Say l Am?

March 12, 2017
Matthew 16:13-17
Jesus Christ came to give us life!
Yet, many who saw and encountered Him never experienced His life.
We all must answer one of life’s greatest questions and that is, who is Jesus Christ!
Depending on your knowledge of Jesus Christ will influence how you answer the questions.
God wants to have a personal relationship with us, but that depends on how we answer the question.
Let’s give consideration to who Jesus is and what we must do with Jesus.
A probing question for consideration (vs. 13)

  • Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”

A thoughtful answer that was inadequate (vs. 14)

  • And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

A personal decision that awaits each person (vs. 15)

  •  He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

A statement of faith that that empowers our life (vs. 16-17)

  • Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

Jesus is the Son of the Living God that is worthy of our worship!

Luke 1-2

  • Luke was a physician. He wasn’t an original apostle or even an eyewitness to Jesus’ words and works. He is the only non-Jewish writer of New Testament books (he also penned Acts). Luke explains that he thoroughly investigated Jesus’ story and his written account is the result of his investigation.  There are details here not found in the other Gospels.
  • Dedication to Theophilus, Birth of John the Baptist Foretold, Birth of Jesus Foretold, Mary Visits Elizabeth, Mary’s Song of Praise: The Magnificat, The Birth of John the Baptist, Zechariah’s Prophecy, The Birth of Jesus Christ, The Shepherds and the Angels, Jesus Presented at the Temple, The Return to Nazareth, The Boy Jesus in the Temple.

Numbers 30-32

I was recently contemplating “Integrity”.  I even planned to do a little bible research on the subject.
Today I didn’t follow my plan for my daily bible reading.  Normally I skip the chapters I missed in previous days in order to stay on track.  But I felt a need to read Numbers 30-32 and what a blessing it is.

Integrity.  The beginning of Chapter 30 starts with vows.  I am reminded of James 5:12:  But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.
If you make a commitment, keep it.  Or do not make the commitment at all.  I find myself saying I will do something and never doing it.  We should always have “integrity”, even though we are not required to live under the laws of the Old Testament.

I see an example of this also in the entire chapter 32. Reuben and Gad demonstrate integrity by their commitment.  The repetition in the text makes the commitment clear, what was said as the commitment and what was understood as the commitment. Reuben and Gad was given the desires of they heart because of their integrity.

Men and Vows,  Women and Vows, Vengeance on Midian, Reuben and Gad Settle in Gilead.

I wonder why the Israelite’s were required to provide so many offerings. Did they require so many to stay focused on God?
The twelve days of Christmas popped into my head as I read the Offerings for the Feast of Booths.
